Dhenkanal, the headquater town of the district of Dhenkanal is a convenient base for visiting various places of interest in the district. It is believed that the town is named after its Savar chief called `Dhenka` who was in possession of a compact area around the present township. SAPTASAJYA (11 Km)* - A place of scenic beauty, Saptasajya is situated at a distance of 11 Km from Dhenkanal. The place is ideal for picnic and relaxation. As legends would have it, the Pandavs spent some days of their incognito life in these hills. The Saptarshi temple and the temple of Raghunath attract large crowds on the Ramanavami day which falls in March-April. A small spring flowing close by enhances the beauty of the place. |
KAPILAS (26 Km)* - Known as Kapilas Kshetra, the loftiest peak of Kapilas range enshrines the temples of Chandrasekhar, Viswanath and Narayana at a height of about 457 meters besides a few caves associated with puranic episodes. The place is identified in the local traditions with `Kailas`, the domicile of Lord Siva in the Himalayas. The Science Park and a mini zoo are added attractions. The Sivaratri which attracts a large number of visitors is the biggest of the fairs and festivals observed here. Regular bus services from Dhenkanal operate upto Deogan which is on the foot of the Kapilas hill. |
JORANDA (24 Km)* - Being the religious headquarters of `Mahima Dharma` the samadhi of mahima Gosain, the propounder of the Mahima cult is enshrined in a temple here. Among other sacred temples of Mahima Dharma are the Sunya Mandira, Dhuni Mandir and Gadi Mandira. A big fair is held on the full-moon day of Magha (February) which attracts a huge crowd, especially the followers of the Mahima cult. |
SARANG (72 km)*- 2 Km south of the Talcher Town at Sarang lies on the right bank of the rocky bed of the river Brahmani, the Anantasayi (sleeping) Vishnu image. The hoods of Anata, the serpent, spread over the head of Lord Vishnu as the crown and the cover, originates from Vishnu's navel. Vishnu, the Supreme being enjoying deep delight of his cosmic sleep in the water of the river Brahmani offers a unique sight for the visitors. |
